President Message – May 2024

What a weekend we had last weekend and another one coming up this weekend to finish off the season

On the Pitch

Under 20s

The Under 20s produced a superb performance last Saturday to overcome Galwegians in the Harry Gale Cup final in Energia Park. Roared on a large some very well dressed crowd, they captured the cup on a scoreline of 18-12. The future of the club is indeed bright and in good hands.

Huge Congratulations to captain, Charlie McLaughlin, Coaches Daragh and Peter, team managers Barry (DJ Baz) and Shane along with Katie, our physio and of course, Harry.

Off the pitch

The Senior Players Awards Ball took place on Saturday night, the under 20s winning just added to a great night. Many thanks go to all those behind organising this black-tie event and the sponsors of the individual awards.

Rugby (youths)

The Under 14 boys took on Greystones in the Metro Division 1 final last Sunday in Greystones and came away with a win by 24-19 and the trophy, a superb performance and huge defensive effort to hold the hosts out in the later stages (see match report below). Congratulations to Giles, Dave, Killian and John and the team led by Hugo Doyle on the day. The coaches were ably assisted by Rory and Tom from the under 20s.

2024 Seapoint Annual Mini Blitz

What a day last Sunday was, one that will live long in the memory and yes, the sun appeared.

A couple of facts about the event

  • over 2,500 rugby players  (boys and girls);
  • the 42nd year of Seapoint Rugby Blitz;
  • 44 clubs from all 4 provinces and Cambridge from England, 163 teams (incl, 20 Girls teams);
  • 150+ dedicated volunteers (look out for the special polo shirts);
  • 600 matches scheduled across 33 pitches

Special guests included current Ireland internationals, Dan Sheehan and Joe McCarthy, ex Ireland International, World cup winning coach and Seapoint legend, Felix Jones and Leo the Lion were there to meet  the players and other Ireland current and past legends were there Jordan Larmour with his extremely good coffee van and John “the Bull” Hayes as a coach on the Bruff under 12s.

And we had DJ Baz on the tunes….

It was great walking around the pitches and welcoming all the clubs to Seapoint last Sunday, the fun and camaraderie highlighted what is good abut game.

There is a huge operation that goes into organising the “Blitz” and my thanks (on behalf of the entire club) go to the organising committee led by blitzmeisters (Tim Kelly and Barry (DJ Baz) Chadwick), the event sponsors and 150+ volunteers who make the day possible.

I would especially like to give a shout out to our comms team (Ciara, Karen et al), the coverage of the event has been nothing sort of amazing and it presented our club in the best way possible.

As I have done every month and will continue to do so, I would like to compliment all our volunteers (both on and off the pitch). Fielding teams across all levels and age grades takes a huge effort and organisation, this is a huge achievement and is down to dedication by players, coaches, committee members, supporters, parents, facilities, sponsors and most importantly a hugely welcoming environment for all our players.

We are constantly looking for volunteers in all areas of the club so I would appeal to members to ask themselves if they are thinking about any matters in the club, can they assist in any way, if the answer is yes, talk to any member of the executive, we’ll have a role for you.
