Presidents Message – November

Presidents Message – November

Halloween’s been and gone – Winter is upon us

Greetings to all members and supporters.

We are now right in the heart of the season on all fronts both on and off the pitch. I hope everyone is enjoying all that the club has to offer despite the ongoing inclement weather.

Upcoming Events

Friday 17th November – we host Ross O’Carroll Kelly again in the clubhouse, he has become a firm favourite with club members over the years and we would expect a large turnout again. This event is SOLD OUT.

Saturday 2nd December – official opening of our new clubhouse. Over the past 3 years, we have invested in our clubhouse, new gym, new dressing rooms, externally and an internal refurb which includes the opening of “The Ruck” coffee shop.

As part of the day on 2nd December, we are having a couple of celebrations as part of our pre match lunch.

2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the first trophy won by Seapoint – the Spencer Cup in 1973, we welcome back the team. My counterpart in Monkstown, David O’Brien has kindly offered to bring the trophy of which Monkstown are the current holders to Seapoint for the occasion.

In addition, that day we are having a Past Presidents get together to thank my predecessors for their commitment to the club over the years and to allow them catch up on old times, we have 26 surviving Past Presidents and I am looking forward to welcoming them on 2nd Dec.

We are playing Monkstown (1st and 2nd XVs) at home that day in the Leinster League.

Rugby (Senior)

1st XV have qualified for the Spencer Cup Final to be played later in the season, we last played in the final in 2010. They have got off to a great start in the Leinster League currently head the standings  with 5 wins out of 6. After beating Westport in the 1st round of the All Ireland Junior Cup, we host Newcastlewest in the ¼ final this Saturday (kick off 2pm – note earlier kick off). All support welcome.

2nd XV have qualified for the Jim Byrne Cup final against DLSP, this will be played in Donnybrook on 9th December with a 5pm kick off. This is a trophy we last won in 2003. All support welcome. Their league campaign continues where they currently lie 4th with 3 win and 1 draw out of 6.

3rd XV have got off to a great start in the Metro 7 League currently heading the standings with 4 wins out of 4. We are away to Old Belvedere in the league this Saturday (kick off 2.30pm). All support welcome.

The fixtures as currently known are on the club website – these are subject to change, so keep an eye for any updates or changes. All support for all teams is always welcome.

Rugby (Under 20s)

U20s came up against a very strong Greystones side in the JP Fanagan 2 qualifier and lost out over the two legs. The JP Fanagan 3 League campaign has commenced with encouraging performances in the first few games but the elusive victory alluded them until last Sunday, when they got off mark with a comfortable win against Ashbourne, scoring a couple of spectacular tries in the process.

New players at all levels from under 20s to 1st XV are always welcome in our club so if you know anybody looking to join or switch clubs, they will be welcomed in traditional Seapoint fashion and they can make contact with any members of the Rugby committee at

Rugby (youth and minis)

Despite the inclement weather, Sunday morning and most weeknights during the week are a hive of activity among all age groups, the future of the club is in their hands and it is great to see the large numbers at all age levels.

As always, any kids whether new members or returning ones will be welcomed with open arms, the more the merrier.

Last but no means least, our famous Dragons teams. Training away every Sunday morning

A special mention to our U18.5 boys squad who won the plate by defeating Clane in the final.

Again a note of thanks to Woodbrook College for hosting us whilst Pitch 2 is being redeveloped.

The next three Saturdays see the 1st XV at home and they will be given a guard of honour onto the pitch by our mini sides (see below):

18/11/23 v Newcastlewest (under 7 & 8s)

25/11/23 v Gorey (under 9 & 10s)

2/12/23 v Monkstown (under 11 & 12s)

I want to thank the coaches for organising their groups for these games.

Representative Honours

As part of the player pathway in Leinster, the Metro sides feature in the Sarah Robinson Cup for the girls and the Shane Horgan Cup for the boys.

In the 23/24 Squads,

I am delighted to congratulate our first female winning representative honours, Roisin Ridge as part of the Sarah Robinson side and also to Roan Smyth, Reif Casserly and Thibault Anderson for making the Shane Horgan side, it is great to see the Seapoint socks on display.

As I did last month and will continue to do every month, I would like to compliment all our volunteers (both on and off the pitch). Fielding teams across all levels and age grades takes a huge effort and organisation, this is a huge achievement and is down to dedication by players, coaches, committee members, supporters, parents, facilities, sponsors and most importantly a hugely welcoming environment for all our players.

Members are encouraged to utilise our fabulous clubhouse for functions such as birthdays, special family occasions etc. Our Clubhouse makes a fantastic venue for whatever you want to celebrate.  Birthdays, Christenings, Communion / Confirmations, charity events – we’ve even had a couple of weddings! This is your club, please take advantage of the superb facilities that we have.

If you want to book the club for a function, please contact our bar manager, Alan Finnie at 086 3843190 and he will be more than happy to assist you.

We also have our coffee shop “the Ruck” open at the weekends. This has been an excellent addition to our facilities and a great cup of coffee also.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first couple of months of the season and I look forward to meeting and interacting with as many members as possible over the coming months.

C’mon the Black, Blue and Green
Yours in rugby

Karl O’Neill
