Under 20s – Seapoint RC Vs University of Galway

November 19th Match Report

Seapoint 33 – University of Galway 24

A typical breezy and cold day awaited the visitors from Galway to Kilbogget park for this rescheduled fixture due to previous flooding on day of original date.  No rain this time but certainly temperatures to give any arctic creatures a longing for a fireside spot on the carpet.

Game kicked off promptly and after some solid exchanges Seapoint moved their way up the park and gained a penalty after five minutes for an offside infringement from the visitors.  With the wind in full force unfortunately Sam O’Donovan pushed the ball just wide. This was to be eclipsed later on by a super kicking display.

Almost within minutes Seapoint were pushing again and after a Joe German break with super forwards support the ball was released to Shane Gevero on the wing to sprint home leaving a very tricky kick, this time however the trusty boot of O’Donovan had the measure of the infamous breeze and made the conversion. Home team 7 to 0

It wasn’t long however and after yet another penalty again by the home side, the visitors capitalized on loose play and got in under the posts to make it 7 points each and setting up what was to be a very tight game for the rest of the afternoon.  This was confirmed only 5 minutes later with another Galway try (unconverted) to put the away team in front for the first time 7  12

Seapoint then turned on the pressure and spent the next 10 mins hammering away at the Galway defense being twice denied scoring chances to forward passes with just a hint of ‘white line fever’ creeping in to the side growing in confidence.

This pressure would be eventually rewarded with Adam Fitzsimons Nolan crashing over and the steady boot from O’Donovan to make t 14 . 12 to the home side just going into the break.

The 2nd half started pretty much where the first had left off.  A real battle now developing .  It took a further 10 minutes with Seapoint forwards  keeping ball in hand and super short range handling for the ball to go to the ever hunting Rory Balmaine to score  – now 19- 12.

Galway were determined to stay in the game threw a line-out ball to the front of the line and catching the Seapoint defense off guard made hay while the sun still didn’t shine.  No conversion meant home team still 2 points up with score at 19 to 17.

Despite having most of the possession Galway were to make an interception in their own 22 and release their flying winger who ran the length of the pitch to score a try and convert to make it now 19 to 24. Home fans now feeling a bit nervy.  The team were not however and doubled down on the efforts to date with determination to not let this one slip away – not today.

Substitutes Chadwick and Brady – fresh legs and handling were to prove valuable a short time later with some excellent offloading from the former and then straight line running from the latter with the pack on his shoulder to get over. Even points with a monster conversion to come, the home support holding its breath – over it went putting Seapoint back in front by 2 with 10 mins to go…this was going to go down to the wire.

There was to be one final effort from Seapoint to shore up the win with a super try from Brian Emerson showing real class and capping a personal best performance this season.  Unfortunately, moments later he was to be replaced following a shin injury

Final score 33 points to 24 to Seapoint who now make that back-to-back wins in this very tough league.  A break now for a fortnight and back with a home game against Navan on Dec 3rd.  This BP win moves Seapoint U20s up to 4th in their table and showing further signs of improvement with each game the future is bright.
